Capt Tommy Pellegrin

Houma, LA USA

Hello everyone. I just hooked up my computer after carrying it with me to Baton Rouge for the week of Gustav. My boats are fine and the dock at Bayou Bait made out OK. It may not have power for a few days. My house lost most of its shingles and I have a little water damage inside but very minimal. The trees in my back yard are mostly on the ground. They missed the house by 4 feet and the shed by 2 feet. I will try and get the charters up and running asap. If we can keep Ike out of here. Good Luck to everyone and to all who called Thanks a million. Like I told Capt. Sonny when this is all over I will have a big cookout and drink off for all those that called and wanted to help me. The Capt's will know who they are. Again Thanks a million. Capt Tommy Pellegrin 985-851-3304.

In response to Big Jack,

Big Jack,

There are many good captains in Venice, but in my opinion, the best is Rimmer Covington, Kevin Beach, and Trey Pique.  Rimmer's charter service is called Mexican Gulf Fishing Company.

I was lucky this weekend to get to make a trip with Rimmer considering the hurricane. We were the only boat I saw that went out of Biloxi, and we slammed 'em.  The water was like glass on Saturday.

We went 6 for 6 on yellowfin and put 2  dolphin (one bull and 1 cow) in the boat, and we could have put many more, but we wanted to leave some out there for everyone else once Venice and Grand Isle are back up and running, ha, and it was more meat than we can eat in next few months

Lets hope Ike stays away from us.  We have taken enough of a beating already!

Rimmer's boat is sick, easily the nicest CC I've ever been on,a 39 Sea Vee with trip Yamaha 350's. We cruised out at 45 and 50 on the way back in!  Kevin runs a Gravois cat with twin 350's too, and Trey has a big Cape Horn.

Anyone who wants to go with the best, these guys are a class act and they fish Hard!  You can reach them at (601) 951-3981, and you should call them now to book for next year.  They are filling their calendar fast.

I'll post some pics later as soon as I get em.

PeeWee's lil Adventure

Bayou Bievenue, LA USA

Eastofmrgo... Why do you and un de pack post pics of your bait? Tell us that's NOT your catch?

Followed oneofthepack's advice today and took the lil boat out.. I mean LITTLE TOO.. I have a 10 foot flat with a 5 hp briggs on the tail end of it. Between me and the briggs, that leaves about 1/4 inch freeboard..

Anyways.. took a bag o dead shrimps out da freezer and for sure drug them doggone shrimp all over the bottom of the pen and I couldn't even convince the crabs or a catfish to take the bait off my line.

Alternated a purple/chartreuse bug around for a while too, with only ONE bump, but it wasn't til I switched to a cork and tipped hooke that  I could find the catfish fingerlings.

The water boiled with garfish though, but only one throwback trout and one fingerling (and I"m being generous) catfish.

Other than that, it was an excersise in running my motor which is acting up a bit!

Still better than sitting in the Superdome with 30,000 drunk people.

Hoping things get better down around BSM very soon so we can start bringing some business down that way again.

Until then... always an adventure.. some bigger than others.

Chas Champagne

Slidell, LA USA

Finally a break to say hello to all fellow fisherman as we all know it has been wild around Louisiana of late. I just saw my house for the 1st time in two weeks. My family and I went to a fishing village in Mexico on the Caribbean and was almost forced to evacuate there from Gustav but it missed Mexico but unfortunately dialed in on Louisiana so as soon as we flew in Saturday night late I had to stay up all night preparing the house and Jewelry Store for hurricane mode then immediately had to evacuate to my old Alma-Ata USM in Hattiesburg to bunker down for the storm. Finally made it back yesterday and spent the last two days getting the store ready to re open this week. Ready for thing to get back to normal and get back on the water as the fishing that I left was spectacular, but we need to keep a close eye on IKE now. Now for some fishing reports as I have many from this month as they were great. Eric and I fished the same area for most of the month and it was awesome. When the trout didn’t eat up the reds took up the slack and when the reds were scarce the trout went crazy. One day when I brought my Uncle Mel, we only caught 8 trout but we landed more perfect slot reds than I have ever seen. It was out of control. My uncle and I witness about a dozen boats land over 100 reds in one spot not including our 2 man limit and Eric’s 5 man limit right next to us. Eric had the family out that day and I am going to let out a little secret, that day Eric’s wife Monica but a butt whopping on everyone in the Ranger boat and was constantly reeling um in. For trout We have had a few limit out days with some really big fish for the middle of August and I know Eric had a day where they caught 75 then 100 the next day in the same spot never moving the boat. I got a chance to bring Mark Paige out agian and we smashed up pretty good. I was on a good bite so I called my friend Chris to meet Mark, Brandon and me at the launch that morning as Chris works 5 min from the laucnh. The trick was to get him back ny 7:30am. We'll he met us in the dark and we prob landed 25 solid trout by his curfew of 7:30am and he now had to find a showed to make it to the office. Where else can you fix you fishing addiction and still make it to the office by 8am, only in the lake. After dropping Chris off, Mark, Brandon and me fished the day up aroound 9am with 42 big trout and 3 reds. All of these fish were caught n live shrimp in about 20’ of water. Then the day before my flight left for Mexico Terry Googins called and told me about what an amazing bite he had found about 200 yards from where Eric and I were catching but the best part about Terry’s bite was that it was all on top water and that got me very excited and after begging Terry if we could go again the next day we decided to go again in the morning the day before my flight. Packing could wait for this. We left early on a Friday morning and arrived in the dark and immediately had 13 decent trout in the boat before the sun cracked the horizon. The tide was Rising hard and Terry kept saying wait till the tide slows and watch what will happen . Well, he was right and I was impressed, it was one of the most fun trips in my life and that is saying a whole lot. Earl the Pearl, Terry and I completely crushed the fish and everything was solid almost all 3 pounders with 10 or so over 4lbs. The day before Earl weighed one 6.4lbs. I know this is hard to believe and I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see with my own eyes but all the trout were caught in 8-15’ of water all on top water and several times I watch 5-7 3lb trout fighting over the top water plain as day in 15 foot of emerald green water it was an amazing sight to see. We ended up with 75 hammers and Terry said they did it again the next day too and the day before. He called me while I was in Mexico to let me know the bite faded when TS Fay’s north winds arrived. Well when the lake’s bite faded it was perfect timing as I found a new fish and a new bite in Mexico. SNOOK, off the bank behind our Hotel in the Marina of Port Aventures. It was very similar to bass fishing where the fish were patterned and precise and when you hooked one the jumped clean out the water with violent head shakes trying to shake the hook. It was awesome. I landed several and broke several off while fishing them. I landed 2 over 10lbs and a few 3 pounders. All I brought besides my clothes was one pole, one reel and one lure the, magic minnow hybrid on a 3/8oz head, and the snook loved it. The trip was great and I recommended it to anyone wanting to vacation in Mexico. We were going to charter a boat fishing in the Caribbean but I was having too much fun off the bank. Now it is back to reality cleaning up from Gustav and keeping a close eye on Ike. Hope all faired well for the Hurricane and be safe when returning. Good luck to all with these storms and hang in there. My neighborhood got crushed by Katrina and it was tuff times but you have to just hang in there. See ya on the water when the waters recede.

Look for all of these increadible fishing trips to be aired on RODNREEL.TV in the near future. Luckly all was caught on camera even the trip to Mexico.

Got a chance to go to Delacroix Island today for the first time. The Island is not in that bad of shape. There are a lot of campers that people left down there that are on the road on there side.First of all people should be made to mobe things like that, all it can do is create problems. My house is there, thank God.My dock is gone, and the outside unit of my A/C was blown down off the part that was built to hold it.The inside of the house is like the day I left it.They are working to restoreing power down there.I like the rest have some yard work to do.I did manage to back my truck all the way down to the front porch, and get out without getting any mud on us.I don't think I am going to do anymore than clean the yard, replace the A/C,and like most going to put it up for sale.Getting to old to keep up with the place

Capt.Phil Robichaux Fishing Charters

Lafitte, LA USA

Lafitte Report

I(Capt.James) made a trip down the road to Lafitte with good friend Bart(aka BAC) yesterday to survey the damage and ride around to find a few fish. The fish part was easy but the damage part was not so good.

Our home base SEAWAY MARINA faired ok with the exception of the boat sheds. The marina itself had very little damage. They will reopen hopefully tomorrow or the next day when power is restored. Now the boat sheds were hit very hard with most of them destroyed. The rebuilding will start soon.

Now our marsh took a a good beating. The land mass between Bayou Rigolets and Bayou Perot really looks bad. There are a couple of new cuts and the shorlines have really eroded away.Little Lake faired ok with Old Chenrie Island being reduced about half.Bay L'Ours faired ok.Hackberry Bay had some damage as well as Creole Bay.The Myrtle Grove side faired well with the exception of Bay Cray. The islands there really took it hard as they are really broken up now.Overall it was not as bad as i was expecting.

The fish are still there in force especially the redfish. It took Bart and I less than 20 minutes to put our limit on ice and we released at least another 30 keepers. It was a redfish on just about every cast.We than set out to find a few trout.we hit a number of areas picking up one here and a couple here.We ended the day with our limits of reds plus 21 keeper trout and a lone bass.

All reds came on H&H Baby Bull Minnows tightlined and the trout came on glow and advacado plastics fished under a cork.

We hope to be back on the water starting thursday depending on what Ike does.TO FISH WITH LAFITTE'S MOST PROFESSIONAL FISHING TEAM, just give us a call at (504) 689-2006.

God Bless

Cocodrie...

Made the trip down to cocodrie to check on the camp and was very encourtaged to see the number of places that surivied. I don't want to mislead anyone, there are lots of camps with damage and some that were destroyed, however the camps as a whole appeared to be in decent shape. (There was standing Mud at most places, and it was around 4" deep at mine.

It appears that Coco Marina, Sportsman Paradise, and Bayou Bait surived the storm with minimal damage. Hopefully they will be back up and running once power and water are restored.

Lets hope IKE ends up in Mexico...

MidLife Crisis

Venice, LA USA

Just returned from Venice. If Katrina was a "10" for Venice, then Gustov was a "3.5". Electricity is off from Belle Chasse to Venice but they hope to have it back up by Sept. 15. I saw many leaning power poles and only a few broken ones. Nothing like Katrina where there were broken ploles for miles and miles.

Damage: Many mobile homes have a few shingles off here and there but for the most part the mobile homes did just fine. I did see a couple that were completely destroyed but that was the exception. I was surprised to see how well the boat sheds made out. Just a few sustained structural damage but many had blown out doors that will need to be replaced. Speaking of doors, the MLC Lodge had a similar problem with the big bay door where I store the MLC. I was able to screw it back in place until I can get a new one. Until then, the building is secure and the authorities are patroling the area very well.

The water surge appeared to be no more than 4 feet at the end of the road and the marinas both survived well through Gustov as compaired to Katrina. The new surface of Tidewater road was not undermined or overtopped as best I could see. This will be a big improvement for those who use this road daily. I imagine it will be some time before they return to finish the project.

At Myrtle Grove two giant helicopters were loading 1000 lb. bags of sand and placing them on the levee in the Citrus Lands area. Much of the cattle lands there are flooded but again, not like Katrina. What is most interesting is, they are loading the sand bags from the median of Hwy. 23. You may have to wait a few minutes while the copters get a load, but it's neat to watch.

Now, a special note. It is hard to sit 175 miles away from Venice when a bad storm threatens your business (your blood, sweat, and tears!) None of the television stations give reports from that area, mostly because there are no reports from that area to be given. For days I have gotten calls from friends and customers asking about the Lodge. Unfortunately I had nothing to tell. Then my phone rang and it was ---- guess who ----- Mike Lane! He had gotten special clearance to go into Plaquemines Parish and he took time to check out the MLC Lodge for me. I was so relieved to hear his voice and get the report. The Lodge was still intact, no roof damage, and the new MLC lighted sign was still standing just fine! Mike, thanks for taking time to check out the Lodge and giving me a call. You are a good friend as well as a good business associate.

During the storm I had several people call to pray for me and I had several people (guides), call asking me to pray for them and their business. It is a special blessing to know that we have a Heavenly Father who helps us in our weaknesses and rides with us through the storms of life. And so that you will know, I'm happy that the MLC Lodge was still there, but even if it wasn't and all was lost, I'd still be happy to say, "Jesus is Lord." Because, I know He would have a plan for my tomorrow!

ABG

Mandeville, LA USA

After loosing sleep for nearly a week, I finally
managed to get down to Grand Isle for the first
time yesterday.  My new camp in Cheniere did
very well, but the camps between my place (end of
the street near Bayou Thunder) and Hwy 1 took a
bit of a beating with most of the damage to camps
closest to the Gulf.  I noted a water line about 8"
high INSIDE of my utility room (4' above my slab)
which means that the water came up about 7' in
the Cheniere Caminada area.  Overall, we feel very
lucky considering how bad it could have been.
The damage in Cheniere was nothing compared to
devastation experienced by the island.  After
surveying my neighbors' camps, I went to the
island to check on several camps owned by family
and friends.  It was SURREAL!  The west end of the
island between Bridgeside and Romes Lounge took
the brunt of the spanking.  Many of the camps
along the beach and along Hwy 1 had sand 2-4'
deep.  There was a distinct difference in the
amount and the nature of the damage to older
camps versus newer camps.  Several older camps
were completely destroyed or had roof or other
structural damage.  Many of the newer camps with
metal roofs were virtually untouched.  The
National Guard, with the help of a local contractor,
has done a good job of clearing Highway 1 of
hundreds of thousands of yards of sand, but there
is still a ton of work left to do to make the roads
safe for the public.  Utility lines are down all over
the island and several streets were not accessible
by car because dead high voltage lines were
hanging low across the entrance.  The further I
traveled in the direction of GI State Park, the less
severe the damage appeared to be.  One of the
startling things was the absence of a sand
dune/levee between the camps on the beach side
of Hwy 1 and the Gulf.  You could literally see the
Gulf surf from the road.  If Ike heads this way,
Grand Isle will have VERY LITTLE to NO protection
from storm surge.  Mayor Camardelle was on WWL
yesterday and indicated that Grand Isle is now
open on a "look and leave" basis for residents and
camp owners.  The only checkpoint was one
manned by LA State Police at the entrance to Fourchon.  We had to show proof
of ownership and ID and we were allowed to enter.
I have several photos, but will have to upload
them when I return home later after the Saints
game as my phone battery died from all of the use
yesterday.

Just got back from Venice . Anyone who didnt fish yesterday missed out on one beautiful day. Venice marina looks better than it has in a while all the boats and trailers are gone so they graded the whole place out . As for the fishing, we were the only boat that left out of Venice marina to go offshore and it was smooth sailling. Bluewater is about 29 miles out , with a really good rip line . Caught Tuna and Dolphin all day .

In response to Fishhawk

Fishhawk,

With that particular style hook, it does happen.
It was a Mustad 39952BL. I use this hook when
the fish are being a little tricky (AKA I was getting
schooled by the fish!). It is a fine wire, wide gap
circle hook.  What makes this hook different is
that is has an offset shank. (Be careful, this hook
is NOT tournament approved). The fish on that
particular day were actually eating the baits and
swimming right AT the boat. This fish had eaten
the rigger bait and then the flat line. Neither reel
made a sound, but I did see the fish boil on the
baits. I locked up the drag on the flat line when
the rigger started going off.  The proof is in a
freezer in Baton Rouge!!! Feel free to contact me if
you have any additional questions.

Anyone hear anything about how Grand Isle fared? I know Belle Pass Marina is still there - its a mess but atleast its still there. Anyone hear from Capt. Tommy Pellegrin? i know they got it pretty bad around Houma. It got pretty intense here in West Baton Rouge about 2pm Monday i cant imagine what it was like down in Cocodrie when that sucker made landfall. An 84 year old water oak fell on my dads house; it fell through the kitchen 10 feet from where he was standing. Its difficult to listen to people here in BR complain about power when they dont realize how lucky they are to be alive!!! I could care less about cold showers, living out of an ice chest, and no A/C. The only thing that has truly mattered to me since 2pm Monday is that my family and friends are alive and doing well. Things have come a long long way in the past 3 days in Baton Rouge although some areas are much better than others (Southdowns, Old Goodwood, Broadmoor, and Old Jefferson are pretty bad with all the fallen trees). There are no more lines for gas, food, and ice. However, they are still having trouble getting ice, food, tarps and other supplies  from Donaldsonville all the way down Bayou Lafourche. I hope all of you and your families are safe and doing well.....and if you are please help out a neighbor who wasn't as fortunate. Lets keep our fingers crossed and say a few extra prayers that Ike leaves us alone.

p.s. Al Walker - i just wanted to let you know i appreciate every minute you have spent helping the fishing community here in Louisiana; keep up the fantastic work my friend!

In Response to Seadation,

I spent the day Friday with a friend of mine
checking on our camp and his boat at Cypress
Cove and from what I saw I would say that both
ramps are open.

There was definatley damage to the area but
nothing like what I saw after Katrina

The power was off but it was on at Bell Chase so
maybe it will be on in Venice next week. Untill
then load your boat with fuel and ice up the road
before you get to Venice and rock on!!!

Hello, friends....

We tentatively put the roof back on Skipper B today as a quick fix until we can do better.  The new air conditioned area (lol) is over the work bays, so we are alright.

If anyone needs us, Skipper B is open again.  Of course, tomorrow is Sunday but you can call me at 504-570-9832 if you need anything....a lot of you traveled a long way this past week and now need tires, etc.  I will go to the shop on Sunday if you need to get squared away before the week starts.

No one will have to rock me to sleep tonight.....Jo Anna

I'm including more miscellaneous pictures of Gustav's impact: impact on our camp, loose/sunken Lake Borgne rigs, and the "picture of the day."

I just talked to Barry Brechtel Friday, and got permission to show pictures of Gustav's impact on Breton Sound Marina. Gustav sucker punched the facility, and the trailer is ruined, as is at least one of their accomodations. The surge flooded the trailer...even moved the trailer. The area also has a thick layer of marsh grass. There are downed power lines. A large boat washed on the road just west of the canal. They have people down there this weekend cleaning up the mess, but they will be closed at least this weekend.

I can also relay some hopeful news. The boat sheds looked ok. The ramp and dock looked good, just need to clean off the marsh grass. I don't know the status of the bait facilities, but at least those buildings are still in place. The road apparently is ok --- the worse debris accumulated at the marina! The Hopedale bridge is now down.

Barry sounds like he's on top of it. What a blow after everything they've gone through, but they are fighting through it.

Hey ya'll went down today to check on the lodges and dock.  We got hit pretty hard on the dock but our lodge is perfect!!!  I guess the extra money on the 190mph wind rating worked.  We never lost one thing on the lodges.
The water was 6'4" at our dock and lodges but the force of the water was crazy.  The dock lifted up about 2ft and is stuck??  The pilings made it good, one has shifted but not a big deal.  We are going to wait for Ike before we make a move to fix.  I guess we have about 4days of work but we will have everything back up before next Monday if Ike doesn't hit.  We have some openings for Oct, Nov and Dec so book now!!!  We are going to be up and running next week even if we have no power, generators are ready to run our lodges and dock if need be.  Thanks for your business and good luck to everyone on their rebuilding!!!

Capt. Charlie

Just a note, Capt. Shane and I were looking at the dock and the trout were hitting in the bayou just infront of our dock like crazy.  It was awesome to see the fish flipping out of the water chasing pogie's.
