Hey all, I have a 2000 Johnson 150 and today I had the cowling off in the water checking for a fuel leak and I found a port on the bottom side of the starboard back part of the block, under the spark plugs. It shoots water out into the cowling and the faster I rev the engine, the more water comes out. I took the boat to the mechanic that worked on it before and he thought it may be a port to hook up a water gauge, that may have used to have a cap on it but wasn't sure. Recommended to plug it. Any ideas? Is it part of the cooling system? I have pics, but don't know how to post them here. How do u do that too?
Thanks, Steven

| I found a diagram in a manual I have that says it's a water restrictor. Can't find anything else about it--what to do w/it? Any ideas? |

| there is no reason for any water to be flowing from a engine block into a cowling...unless something came apart ( hose, plug. kc nipple , casting plug (or commonly refered to as freeze plugs)., you call it a water restrictor? is it still there and just fell out? or is it at the bottom of the cowling> in fact I would not run the engine again as it might have drop the flow to several cylinder lining and head coolant paths... that a bad thing,,, not sure about the mech but maybe I would find another one that works on 2000 Johnson 150>> just saying.. |

I wish there was someway to post the pic I took b/c it clearly shows it. Can I email it to you? It looks like any nipple fitting that you'd put a hose on, it comes out about 1/2 inch and it has a small bulb end on it. I pulled the lower cowls off yesterday to change the impeller and looked all around it and could find nowhere to hook it to. Yeah, the diagram in the manual I have called it a water restrictor, but does not go further. It's just an exploded diagram and does not show it hooking to anything. What's kc nipple? definitely not a casting plug.
One thing I remember is 4 yrs ago, I got water in the oil reservoir and blew a hole in 1 piston. Same shop reworked the head (and I think it's the same side), and put it back and after that was when I noticed some water in the bottom of the cowling. I'm not trying to blame them, just thinking the 2 are related. I've been fishing it like this for 4 yrs w/no problems and just now discovered it. I only did that b/c I took cowling off in the water yesterday to check a fuel leak I repaired when I saw the water stream. Cowling has a drain hole in it. |

Talked w/Johnson today and the guy feels it's the rectifier regulator venthose and should be attached to the rect. reg at top of block under shroud--I'll look tonight when I get home from work.. |

Sent you a reply by email this morning... thanks for the pictures. Gave you a recommendation to just plug it... Looks like a sensor line that the plug rubber hose came off of... maybe water pressure...it was not in the flow path of any cooling water... way to small of a hole.. Maybe when the engine head was rebuilt they forgot to reinstall that little tube of hose... and a kc nipple is a King Combination Nipples which the hose nipples made from tubular stock, to fit straight end hose. The threaded end, in all styles (except "Jump Sizes"), has a male NPT thread the same size as the hose shank; the threaded shanks like on some of the newer jig head... used on through hole fittings and bilge pump, live well hose connection, small rubber hoses.. Etc... good luck Fish Gill |

| Sorry, I haven't checked email yet. I talked w/ Johnson motors last week and he thinks it's a water line going up to the rectifier regulator and said to pull the top plastic shroud off. I did and there's another nipple that looks like this one, but has a rubber cap ziptied on it. I took a pic of this and will try to talk to them again tomorrow and mail the pic. According to what he had to say, I believe these 2 are supposed to be hooked up. I think he said they started doing this in motors post 1995. Thanks, I'll let u know. |
